Mrs Gauri Kaul

Sister of Prof PN. Dhar, a leading economist and principal Secretary to Mrs Indira Gandhi. Married toPulwama in a familyPrem Nath Kaul (Khan), resident of village Hawal, Distt of shopkeepers. Her husband however studied law in Lucknow and took a job in Delhi in 1950 in an insurance company.

She would always spend 3 months in Srinagar every year and never got adjusted to life in Delhi. She would be glued to DD Kashir in last several years of her life.

Very articulate with a sharp memory and an analytic mind; could recite Kashmiri poetry, Lala Dedi wakh and Sheikh Noorudin's shrueks. Used to spend hours with late Prof. Aga Ashraf Ali giving him lot of information of good old Kashmir for his books.

She has left a legacy of her 2 sons. Upendra Kaul cardiologist and Shankar Kaul who is a very senior executive in a well known medical device company Baxter in Singapore. Her 2 brothers Prof PN Dhar and Sh B L Dhar, Husband Mr P N Kaul, grand children Samir and Amita both married happily (Upendra's children), Keshav and Sharika (Shankar's children), Daughter in laws Upkar (Upendra's wife) and Anita (Shankar's wife) all doing very well in life. Breathed her last on 13th June 2011 at 8 am, Upendra was on her side and tried to do his bit which obviously did not work this time.

Prof Upendra Kaul, MD, DM, FCSI, FSCAI, FAPSIC, FACC, FAMS

He graduated in Medicine (MBBS) from The Maulana Azad Medical College and continued his studies at the same institution to secure MD in 1975 and DM in cardiology in 1978. Later, he obtained advanced training in interventional cardiology from Australia during 1983 to 84. He has served the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) as a professor of cardiology and has been a member of the faculty of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, G.B. Pant Hospital, Batra Hospital and Fortis Health Care, NCR and Executive Director and Dean at Fortis Health Care, New Delhi. Kaul is a former president of the Cardiological Society of India and the SAARC Cardiac Society and is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS). He has published over 450 medical papers and has won the Medtronic Award for the Best Scientiﬁc Paper in 1983. He received the highest Indian award in the medical category, Dr. B. C.Roy Award, in 1999. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honor of the Padma Shri, in 2006, for his contributions to Indian medicine. He is also a recipient of the Dr. Thapar Gold Medal in 1970, Searle Award of the Cardiological Society of India in 1986, Shakuntala Amirchand Prize of the Indian Council of Medical Research in 1987, Press India Award in 1992 Dr. Kaul is one of the top Cardiologists in New Delhi and has an experience of over 35 years. He is one of the ﬁrst Cardiologists to start coronary interventions in India & has started a number of new techniques in I n t e r v e n ti o n a l C a rd i o l o g y w h i c h i n c l u d e percutaneous cardiopulmonary bypass, rotational & directional atherectomy, coronary stenting and percutaneous laser myocardial revascularization etc. He was formerly Professor of Cardiology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.

Shri M A Pathan
Obtained his B.A (Hons) degree in Economics and Diploma in Petroleum Management from Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. He joined Indian Oil in 1962 and served in various leadership roles including as Chairman of Indian Oil Corporation Ltd, India's largest company and a Global 500 organization for ﬁve years in a row till March 2002. He served as Group Resident Director with the tata Group, India's largest and most respected corporate conglomerate and as Non-Executive Chairman of a number of Tata group portfolio companies from 2007 to 2012, when he provided overall leadership and strategic direction. He has been directing the telemedicine project of Gauri Kaul Foundation since its inception in September 2020.

Sh Amod Kanth
A highly decorated IPS oﬃcer awarded police medals for gallantry and meritorious and distinguished services, has also been oﬃcially recognized as an “Outstanding Social worker and a Global Hero by the US government for combating human traﬃcking. He has taken over as the Chairman of Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights after his last police assignment as Director General. He has been involved with wide-ranging work for the under privileged and deprived communities the country for rehabilitating victimised street and homeless children and juveniles across in conﬂict with the law. His eﬀorts in this direction are visible through his experiments in Prayas JAC and several national level institutions. He is contributing to several national-level advisory and policy-formulating bodies like NITI Aayog. He has been instrumental in guiding the Gauri Kaul Foundation from time to time.

Devaki Jain
Graduated in Economics and Philosophy from St Anne's College Oxford is now an Honorary Fellow of the College. From 1963-69, she was a lecturer of Economics at Miranda House, Delhi University. She moved on from teaching to full time research and publication as the Director of the Institute of Social Studies Trust. Over the course of her career Devaki Jain founded a wide range of institutions such as the Development Alternatives for women for a New Era (DAWN), a third world network of women social scientists. Besides this she has been a member of several policy making bodies in India and abroad including the state planning board of Karnataka and several bodies of the United Nations. She is a recipient of the Padma Bhushan and an honorary doctorate from the University of Westville, Durban, South Africa. She has been advising us on the social programs of the Gauri Kaul Foundation since its inception.

Dr Sudhir S Bloeria
IAS (J&K-1968) is an ex-Army Oﬃcer having served in the infantry Jammu and Kashmir Riﬂes from 1966 to 1972. An alumnus of the Scindia School Gwalior, he is a science graduate with a masters Degree in History, and acquired the PhD Degree for his thesis on “The Battles of Zojila-1948”. A graduate of the National Defence College, New Delhi .A keen student of military history and national Security matters. He was the Chief Secretary of the J&K government from November 2002 till his superannuation in 2005. In 2011, he became the founder Vice Chancellor of the Central university of Jammu. Dr Bloeria has authored several books, his last one being “Ladakh in the Twentieth Century.” He has been a very important advisor to the Gauri Kaul Foundation for its projects in bordering areas of the UT.

Meera Shah
Director of 'Sociation for Action on Health, Education and Environment (SAHEE)'. She has been working in the areas of health, education, employment and environment in the rural areas of India for many decades. She has extensive experience in health policy and community health, particularly in promotion of good health, prevention of ill health, management of chronic conditions and non-communicable diseases, and self care. Meera has worked with the World Bank as development economist in various countries such as Myanmar, Nigeria, Morocco. She has academic degrees in several disciplines including Mathematics and Economics from Delhi University, Operations Research from Bombay University, and Sociology and Management Science from Columbia University. She is an independent director at Gauri Kaul Foundation.
