Leper Colony Medicine project
We took a decision to adopt the inmates of the Leper colony, Srinagar for providing free
medical care in collaboration with our partner, Greater Kashmir Media. During these camps we observed
the problems of elderly population who have many other additional co morbidities like joint problems,
old strokes, issues of hearing and vision, chronic kidney disease, cancers etc. This made us to modify
our methodology of the evaluation and formed Gauri Old Age Mission (GOAM) to look after the senior
citizen differently with geriatric medicine as a component and adding specialists in our mission.

for geriatric and heart related problems.
Next camp by Gauri Old age Mission (GOAM) under the leadership of Prof U Kaul, went with
a team to Ring Zabal Budgam for a one-day Healthy Heart Camp for senior citizen on Friday 16th July
2021. We evaluate 90 persons who had registered to see us. Some of the striking findings were absence
of obesity and a low body weight. Blood pressure (B P), blood sugar estimation and an
electrocardiogram were recorded in all. We did electrocardiograms (ECG’s) for all the participants. In
general, they were normal but 4 persons had classical ECGs of previous heart attacks and had no clue
of this although all had classical symptoms of shortness of breath. We made them aware of this fact
and prescribed appropriate medicines with supply for 30 days and counselled them to see us at Gauri
Heart Centre, Srinagar for further evaluation as per our GOAM protocol. This would be free of cost.
